Night Life

Tonight, we're gonna put on our Friday best, and go dancing, but if you really want to know about Island nightlife, it's a lot more to do with sunsets, walks, bats, and owls, lighthouse-buoyes shining their Gatsby-green lights...

A week ago, on the night of the full moon, after Jupiter and Venus had met, moved on, but still close together enough to catch the eye, we took a little nighttime walk after I came home from work.

Walking at night is a different experience all together; imbued with different sounds, and smells, with all our primitive senses tuning into the rustle of deer behind the hedge, the shadow of a nighthawk (which we now see everywhere, thanks to Hudson and his biologist dad) above, the rocks underfoot, the edge where the cliff meets the ocean...

In this season of bonfires and parties, of weeding and watering into the night, we try to remember to have a nightlife, be outside after dark. There is no hunting and gathering then, no chores. Just ghost stories, warm pavement, and footpaths that seem to wind longer than ever in daylight...

It's a good place, listening to seals breath in the moonlight, wondering half-seriously, if they might be the sounds of sea monsters instead...

Now where was I heading? Oh, yeah, party! Happy nightlife, folks!
